A faulty Windows update just removed the Copilot AI assistant from Windows PCs. Last week’s March update for Windows 11 24H2 was already causing issues for users, but now it’s creating problems for Microsoft too. The update is unintentionally uninstalling Copilot, the assistant the company has been pushing over the past few years.
Bug Identified in the Update
According to Windows Latest, an unexpected bug has appeared in the update that causes the Copilot app to be uninstalled on some devices and unpinned from the taskbar. The issue affects updates KB5053598 (Windows 11 24H2), KB5053602 (Windows 11 23H2), and KB5053606 (Windows 10 22H2). Microsoft has confirmed the bug, updated its release notes, and is working on a solution.
Other Issues with the Update
The March update for Windows 11 24H2 has been linked to other problems, including BSOD errors (Blue Screen of Death), SSD crashes, and issues with Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). Problems with Remote Desktop were reported back in October 2024 when Microsoft first released Windows 11 24H2, and the latest update has likely made those issues worse. Microsoft is currently investigating the situation.
What can you do?
Until Microsoft fixes the issue, you can manually reinstall the Copilot app from the Microsoft Store and pin it back to the taskbar. It's worth noting that the Copilot for Microsoft 365 has not been affected by this bug.
