Authorities in New Mexico confirmed Tuesday that the deaths of Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were not caused by a gas leak.

The New Mexico Gas Company found “no significant issues” in its investigation of gas leaks and carbon monoxide at the couple’s home, according to officials.

That said, the company did find a tiny leak at one of the stove burners and noted four code violations related to how lighters were installed for a water heater and fireplaces. This inspection took place on February 26.

“Those issues are not believed to have played any role in the deaths of Gene Hackman, Betsy Arakawa, or their dog,” authorities said.

Officials passed the findings to the Office of the Medical Investigator. Hackman, Arakawa, and their dog were found dead in their New Mexico home under circumstances considered “suspicious enough” to require a closer look. The exact cause of their deaths is still unknown.

Neither Hackman nor Arakawa had visible injuries, and there were no clear signs of foul play, based on initial autopsy reports. Investigators also found no obvious evidence of carbon monoxide or gas exposure.

Both Hackman and his wife tested negative for carbon monoxide, which seems to rule it out as a cause of death, officials said Friday.
